In Room 6 we have completed our asTTle reading test for the beginning of Term 1, 2011. Some of the children found it a bit tricky but it has enabled me to see where the needs are for their learning. The children have viewed their asTTle results and together we have decided on their goals for the term. One skill in particular that stood out as something the children need to work on, is inferring, and we described this as 'reading between the lines'. We are using Sheena Cameron's resources (among others) to look at what inferring is and how to learn this new skill, or improve on it if we already know the basics.
We are starting Week 5 of Term 1 by looking at skimming and scanning, and how this can help us to make inferences. We will be looking at different journal stories or articles, and skimming over them to find key words. Identifying the key words will help us to understand the main point of the sentence or paragraph. We can then use these key words to help us answer questions about what we have read, when the answer is not always obvious. We will all be experts at inferring soon!
As each child reaches their goals, they will be re-grouped depending on their learning needs and we will set our next lot of goals to work towards.
